Over 160 Pairs of Jeans Collected at PLH to Repurpose into Shoes for Kids in Africa
The Sole Hope used jean drive hosted by Perry Lutheran Home was a great success. Over 160 pairs of jeans were donated to be turned into shoes for children living in jigger infested areas of Uganda, Africa.
“We are so thankful for the donations from the Perry community, staff, residents, and families. It is part of who we are at Perry Lutheran Home, Main and Spring Valley campuses, to be a part of something meaningful and bigger than ourselves. We are a Christian, Caring Community for those not only living with us in Perry, Iowa, but also for those across the world,” expresses Mollie Clark, Director of Marketing at Perry Lutheran Home.
Next steps for the jeans while at Perry Lutheran Home are to be cut into specific shapes and prepared for shipment. This will involve patterns, markers, scissors, and many helpful hands from staff, residents and tenants, families, service groups, and community members. More information will be provided to the public about dates, times, and locations to come help transform these used jeans into specific patterns for shoes.
“Our Perry Lutheran Home campuses are places for people of all ages. The biggest misconception is that senior care communities are places where people go to wait out the rest of their life. If only everyone could come in and see the vibrant living community we have here, you’d soon realize that the ‘typical’ nursing home in your mind is a thing of the past. We have the little daycare children walking about and interacting with the residents; teenage volunteers engaging through various activities; civic groups, social groups, and community members involved with service projects; it’s truly a special place to work, live, volunteer, and thrive,” exclaims Deb Koelln, Chief Care Officer and Director of Nursing at Perry Lutheran Home.
Christ’s love and joy, along with respect and admiration between all generations, is certainly present at Perry Lutheran Home as a “home” for people of all ages. Those who live, work, visit, volunteer, and attend daycare are all part of PLH’s innovative, personalized, and Christ-centered care. Visit www.perrylutheranhome.org to learn more.
