First Residents Successfully Admitted into Jacmel Lutheran

Perry, IA, January 21, 2019–
Despite challenging circumstances while in Haiti, the Perry Lutheran Homes and
Lutheran Family Service team, together with Ministry in Mission, were able to
open and admit the first residents into the Jacmel Lutheran Home in Jacmel,
Haiti January 9 – 16. The eldercare home was designed to provide care for ten
of Jacmel’s most vulnerable elders.

Food, clean water, safe shelter and medical care are essential for life. However, these critical items are not easily accessible to the elders of Haiti due to no government safety net and poverty forcing many to live a life on the streets.

Perry Lutheran Homes is working to change this destitute reality for elder citizens in Jacmel, Haiti. The first ever intergenerational eldercare home of its kind is being constructed and phase one nearing completion. Construction is being overseen by a partnering organization, Ministry in Mission, and funding for construction

A special award celebration and presentation event was held to celebrate the recent award given by LeadingAge Iowa to Perry Lutheran Homes. The prestigious LeadingEdge Care and Services award was presented to Perry Lutheran Homes to recognize and hold up as an example the life-changing work through their Meaningful Mission Projects program.

The community of Perry, together with Perry Lutheran Homes, is stepping up in a big way to support Perry’s elder citizens. On July 14, sponsors from Perry and surrounding towns and runners from as far away as West Bend, Iowa came together to raise over $10,000 for the inaugural Run Through Time 5K.

The Run Through Time is part of a larger movement called StepUp! (Serving Together our Elders in Perry) designed to raise awareness for and respond to the needs of our elder citizens. The 5K run was organized by

Perry Lutheran Homes has been awarded the 2018 LeadingEdge Care and Services award for an innovative program that provides meaning, purpose, and value to the lives of residents, volunteers, and staff.

Perry Lutheran Homes’ Meaningful Mission Projects Program was selected for the award by industry professionals at LeadingAge Iowa that recognizes one organization annually for programs and services that have dramatically benefited the residents and serve as models of innovation and excellence. This includes those that address some of the most complex challenges throughout the continuum of aging services.

A new and unique effort was launched on May 31 as one hundred people from the Perry area gathered for the first Celebration Dinner focused on Music, Memories and a Generation of Greatness at Hotel Pattee.  Sponsored by Perry Lutheran Homes’ Board of Directors, the dinner was designed to call attention to the blessings and needs of our growing elder population.

The Christian, Caring Community of Perry Lutheran Home was happy to host three LWML meetings over the course of two days. As a mission partner and generous donor toward the newly opened Acorns & Oaks intergenerational, Christian daycare, the LWML got to see first-hand the fruits of this innovative mission that is now possible, in part, through their support.
